Cat Behavior Problems Are More Common Than You
May Believe
Since you are
reading this you are probably worried or frustrated by your cat’s
behavior. If you’re like
me, you love your cat, but sometimes their behaviors can be very
upsetting.
Cat behavior
problems are typically due to anxiety or stress.
These problems are more common than you think and there
are many different solutions to them.
Problems around the litter box, furniture scratching, aggression,
etc. are the number one reason why cat owners seek veterinary advice.
House cat behavior problems are
common and are usually the
result of boredom or anxiety. Regular exercise and play time will help
prevent both.
The most common problems are
aggression, either owner-directed or between cats, fear-related
behaviors, and compulsive behaviors that cause problems for the cat and
perplex the owner.
Behavior problems in cats are the leading cause of their premature
death, which occur mostly in the nation's shelters and pounds.
Your Cats' Behavior
A cats' behavior will change when the cat feels threatened.
When a cat behavior problem develops, the owner's typical
response is to ignore it or live with it until it becomes unbearable.
At the breaking point where the cat's behavior becomes
intolerable, it may be a matter of life or death for the cat, who is at
risk of losing its home, or even its life, because the caretaker refuses
to live with the problem any longer.
One of the main reasons animals
are relinquished to animal shelters is because of behavior problems yet,
many problems could easily be solved by understanding cat behavior and
why they misbehave.
If people understood their cats better, and knew what instincts shaped
their cats behavior, there would be less frustration with behaviors that
are normal and it would go a long way toward solving cat behavior
problems. And a love and fascination with those instincts would be a
natural result.
Because many problem
behaviors stem from normal cat behaviors, it is important to understand
and accommodate for cats' normal behaviors, including social behavior,
elimination behavior, grooming, and feeding.
The behavior problems in cats are due to many different reasons and
there are a variety of different solutions.
But what can be done to solve these weird cat behavior
problems?
When
Behavior Problems Arise
Cats are often labeled as angry or vengeful when behavior problems
arise, but these types of labels do nothing to help us understand or
solve the problem.
These cat behavior
problems can be: inappropriate elimination, destructive scratching,
over-grooming, excessive vocalization, aggression, and various other
behavioral problems. Significant
cat behavior problems should trigger the pet owner to take the cat to a
veterinarian for a check up. Be sure to ask the vet about their qualifications
to treat cat behavior problems. Many
behavior problems can be successfully helped through the right kind of
interaction.
Cat
Behavior Problems Are Solvable
People need to understand that cats can be trained, bad habits can be
broken, and cat behavior problems are solvable.
Training is an invaluable preventative strategy, but will not
circumvent all behavior problems. Cat
behavior training requires patience, understanding, and consistency, but
the results can be very rewarding.
You can have a much more rewarding life with your cats if you only learn
a few secrets on cat behavior. Once
your cat's behavior problems are solved, maybe you'll even decide he
should learn a trick or two.
