Cat care Tips There are so many aspects to caring for your cat - where does one begin?
To start find a veterinarian with not only medical expertise but cat and people skills as well. There will be a lot of communicating between the vet, yourself and your cat. If you don’t already have one, ask other per owners. Word of mouth is and probably always will be one of the best advertisements there is. Regardless of whether you purchase your pet or adopt it, a thorough examination for your cat should be priority one on your list for caring for your new addition. Take a stool sample to the vet to be tested for worms. The most recent would be best. Vaccinations are a must in the care of your cat. The needs will be somewhat different depending on whether you have a kitten or an adult cat. Your vet will let you know exactly what your per needs. I have found it is helpful to make a list of questions before going to the vet concerning the care of your cat. For example the food recommended for the age and physical condition of your cat to assure proper nutritional care. If you are a novice pet owner you may want to ask about litter boxes and the best litter to purchase, beds and bedding, scratching posts, toys, grooming, identification, protection from fleas and ear mites, neutering or spaying. The list could go on and on. Jot down anything you are concerned about regarding the proper nurturing and care of your new cat. When the word cat is mentioned, hairball isn’t far behind! They are usually vomited up. Although they look gross and nasty, hairballs are not usually serious for a cat but can in some instances cause obstructions that will need the care of your vet. Cats are fastidious groomers, spending an enormous amount of time licking their fur. Care can be taken to help prevent hairballs. Products can be purchased from your vet, pet store and even some supermarkets. Some cat foods are formulated with a high content of crude fiber which also h4elps. The word “Hairball” will be on the package but read the label carefully. It is my understanding that it should contain at least 8% fiber. Brushing your cat helps it care for it’s grooming needs and removes a lot of dead hair that will not end up in your cat’s tummy. Checking for fleas should be done on a regular basis. Brushing your cat will help you find them. It will also help your cat care for it’s fur, especially long haired cats. If you find fleas, it is best to ask your vet what would be best to use. The treatment should be approved for a cat. Cats lick so much and some ingredients in anti flea products can be toxic to them. You should also get information on what steps to take to rid your home of them. A Flea can lay hundreds of eggs in its life span. They fall off your cat onto furniture and carpet whiting to hatch and re-infest your pet. Ear mites are another thing that should be checked in caring for your cat. There are usually no symptoms but they can irritate some cats. If ear mites are severe it can cause an ear infection. If they are dirty and you can see dark colored wax, it would be worth a trip to the vet. These have been just a few of the things to watch for with your cat, a good vet can give a list of many others so that you and your cat can have a fun and healthy life together.
